Blacksmithing Classes

Our blacksmithing fundamental classes are broken down into three different levels following a globally recognized curriculum through ABANA(Artist Blacksmith Association of North America).

Level one- Fundamentals of Forging – ApprenticeABANA Level I
Level two- Intermediate Forging – Journeyman
Level three- Advanced Forging – Master

After the level one is complete the student will have learned all the basics needed for forging. At this level we start helping the student sell things they make, and bring them on for larger projects. This gives them real world experience as a blacksmith in addition to the education. Level 1 typically takes 40-50hrs to complete, and the student will benefit greatly if they have a forge at home.

Level two starts getting into the more decorative aspects of custom ironwork. The student learns new techniques on how to become more efficient and forge more complicated pieces. Generally projects get more specific, detailed and challenging. For example instead of forging a generic leaf they forge an oak leaf. They also have greater opportunities for live demonstrations, and continued help on the business side of blacksmithing. Even if they don’t want to sell their goods, approaching blacksmithing this way makes them a better smith.

At level three students get a real challenge in technical ornamental ironwork. Very detailed, and designed specifically to push the students to new levels of mastery and competence. They will have the opportunity of taking on commissioned work if desired, and can begin assisting in teaching the other level classes. Generally students at this level have a desire to be a master blacksmith, and at the end have the skills to prove it.

In addition to these skill focused classes we also offer project specific classes specializing in things like tool making, MiG welding, metal drilling, grinding, etching, carving, inlays, polishing, different types of metal finishes and preservation techniques. Classes are available M-Th 10a-12, 1p-7p and most Saturdays from 10a-5p.
